Created in Morocco for M.A.D.S. Contemporary Art Gallery virtual exhibition, Milan 2021.
‘Journey to Agadir’, Acrylic and pressed flowers on canvas.
This piece for M.A.D.S Contemporary Art Gallery Virtual Exhibition was created during, and inspired by, my time spent in Morocco whilst teaching yoga there for two months.
Using colours that referenced the dust and sand that were a constant feature of my time in Agadir, I spent the time creating this piece reflecting on my experience of being a solo woman, in a culture so different from my own.
My thoughts throughout the process often returned to my observations of the role of women here, where and how I fitted into the community, and the surprising contrast of my interactions between locals and tourists.
Despite the total language barrier between myself and the local women that worked in the same space as me, we managed to bond and connect during this artistic process. It seemed that whilst we could not converse in language, the painting was enough for us to express a shared interest in creating something beautiful.
